4/4 just means a bass drum on every beat... as in house or techno.
as for ebw7... its far from minimilst? its a cacophony of insane noises, screaming acid lines, thumpin drums, solid bass grooves. sure it doesn't have any melody or vocals but its far from minimal! Play it out in a club and watch everyone go mental to it, i loves it!
saw them play live at glastonbury last june and they were fuking amazing. Acid Children was a memorable new track... it had a top notch squiggle funked up acid line and great grooves. They have definately stripped stuff back a bit since the previous album, but its def a good step. After all, their first album was genius... and this was partly due to its pure simplicity! Simple beats and grooves in the right combinations.
looking forward to hearin more new stuff.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I love the new tune also! I just mean compared to the stuff on come with us, it sounds like they've stripped it back a bit. I reckon it's a good thing... music doesn't have to be complicated to be good to listen to, and for the chems to be able to write a track as good as acid children without it being overly complicated is a sign of good things to come in my opinion. Roll on Chemical 5....

The new tune is, to my ears at least, what's been described here as "stripped down" but I wouldn't quite call it minimalist. Perhaps it doesn't provide a lush landscape as, say, The Sunshine Underground - but there is a lot going on in the song, it seems like there is a raw energy in that song that's reminiscent of Dig Your Own Hole - and if it's an indication of where they're headed then I'll gladly go with them. And who knows, this is an Electronic Battle Weapon. At the very least it's a (for lack of a better word) fondation for a song that might not make it's way onto their next record, or it might present itself in another reworked form by the time it makes it onto an album. Or it might remain an Electronic Battle Weapon to be released on an ep or as a b-side. Who knows but them, right? :)
Another thing. We're hearing second generation copies of the song. I'm sure there are all kinds of subtleties that help flesh out the song that we're not hearing with the bbc presentation. Classic examples is what I heard of Come With Us and how much better, how much more fleshed out the actual cd sounded than the mp3's I downloaded beforehand. There was so much my ears were missing that I wouldn't have heard if I didn't listen to the cd. Same thing with that sample version of Otter Rock and The Golden Path.

er, 4/4 means 4 quarter notes per bar.
But it's commonly used to indicate that a track is based on a 1-3 kick and 2-4 snare, or 1-2-3-4 kick beat.

Thank you all for your answers! I am now enlightened 8) . I have one other question, which is what an 'acid' track means e.g. acid house etc. I have up to now presumed it means slightly dark electronica with lots of synth noises but I could be wrong. :-?
I am really liking all the new material. A new sound that's really cool and inviting. Nude Night is a lot like Acid Children, they both have a similar overall sound, especially since they have slow, weird sounding samples from possibly computerised voices. I also feel that Acid Children sounds like Loops of Fury 'cos they both have these breaks where the sound is this low rumbling that builds up to a 'release' back to the main music. Cool 8) .

There are so many "dance music" dictionaries out there: http://www.analogik.com/res_styles.asp for example) and it's really so hard to describe in words what something is supposed to sound like.
When I hear an "acid" line in a song to my ears it's very much a mid to high pitched sound (intermittent, sort of... beeping like a good example would be the noises in the Chems/Kylie remix) or wiggly sound, even a squelch (the Chemicals have those wiggly and squelchy sounds down pat!) that builds up and up - they can get louder, higher pitched, maybe even faster until it reaches a full, bangin crescendo. Acid isn't always used to create a melody, but it's part of the fabric of a song, you know - it works around or enhances what's going on so it makes the song 'peak.'
Then again, that's my lame description. ;) You're best off just looking around for some good examples - once you hear it, you'll realize you've been listening to those acid noises in those Chemical songs all along!

not a dj tool, a production tool
a classic bit of kit that was originally designed of producing bass line. originally aim as a tool for guitarists. but when you play with the cut off and resonance knobs you can make some mad acid patterns!!
classic sounding 303 tunes are josh wink's - higher state of consciousness, and fatboys slim's - everybody needs a 303
you can also get software emulation for this bit of kit via propellerhead's rebirth

Also, checkout anything by Hardfloor. Most of their tracks are built around the ol' 303, but "Acperience" springs to mind (it's the only title I can remember, also maybe "Circus Bells" as well?? I can never remember the names of techno tunes!). They also did a remix of "Blue Monday". My fav remix of BM actually.
They had some triphop tracks too that were full of tasty acid squelches + heavy beats.

Thanks for posting that pic of a 303, I haven't seen one for a while. It's probably the most sought after synth ever, I mean, if you asked someone to name a classic synth it's what they'd probably say.
I wish I had one....
Actually, only if it had been converted to midi, I've heard that the sequencer on it is an absolute b***h to program. Roland are like that, I've got a D2, and I can't use that sequencer, I've had it for 2 years!
