The SC1 has a 1.9 SOHC I-4, pumping out a whopping 100 hp at 5200 rpm,
You've got to be kidding?! There are 1.9 diesels that have more power than that! Why is the engine that crud? About 1.6 should give about 100hp, what's the other 0.3L doing?
*shrug* I imagine it would be because it's a SOHC, rather than a double overhead cam. The SC2's engine is a DOHC 1.9L and had about 25 more horsies. Also, the torque and horsepower curves are flatter, giving a better impression. Depending on gear and RPM, my mom's Cavalier feels as quick as my Talon, despite yielding 50 horsepower to it.
Still, with how light the car is and the fact that I don't really care about it being too quick, it's not a big detractor to me. Or at least it isn't on paper. We'll see when I get behind the wheel of one.
Right now I just want a nice-looking, non-rusting, fuel-efficient, sporty-looking car. I used to have delusions of grandeur about fixing the Talon up, but the thousands I've put into repairs have made me a little more pragmatic.
By comparison, the 2002 Honda Civic base model has a 1.7 L I-4 that has 115 hp @ 6200 and 110 ft-lbs torque @ 4500 rpm. Sounds like better stats, but look at where in the rev range those peaks are.
In the past couple years, the horsepower ratings have REALLY come up, to the point that even your average econobox is shooting in the 140 hp range. And the average family car is around 250 hp.
