i just wonder why people use the name they do on this forum?? i mean some are self explanatory like chemicalreaction, biff and mexican chemical for example. but i'm pointing this question to the likes of antype, whirly, nerdcore and iggy-punk.

i had the idea of this thread when some dipstick on this forum questioned what kinda name is 'sneakerbeater'. its a bloody good name if you ask me (probably i am biased seeing as i second baptised myself this name)

i stole my name from the big beat boutique (the club where i did my growing up in terms of music). this is the club that has played host to the chems on many occasions, like the time when the chems had there first number one hit 'setting sun' it was the place the chems played their celebratory set. it was the club where i witnessed there best ever chems dj set, the boutique christmas party 2001. it is the club that started life as a scout hut on the beach front in brighton that fatboy slim used to play at before he became big. it was a great time in my clubbing life.

anyway around 2001 the club landed the tag line 'ADeckWreckingMashupForSneakerBeaters' which was cool and i got a badge saying 'Sneaker Beaters'. i loved the sneaker name so much i named a mix as 'sneakerbeating'. i was still djing under my old name which was a variation of my christian name, which was a bit of a wank name, no need to divolge.

soon after i decided to become sneaker:beater. i love the name, most of my friends now address me as sneaker or sneakerbeater which is cool. now if i could only change my name by d-pole how cool would that be, i'd officially be Mr Beater

Thanks for that insight...

Now I; at least, know where you are coming from...

I only wish I could say the same about my "musical up-bringing"...

Cool, sneakerbeater - now I know what's in your name! I always liked your name despite what that dipstick said, reminds me of really giving your sneakers a beating on the dancefloor. At least I interpreted somewhat correctly! ;)

As for my name... Well, in 1996 before my son came along, my husband and I went to visit my folks who were living in London. We picked up a book beforehand called "London By Night." It was actually a decent guide to what was going on, mentioned lots of restaurants, night tours, clubs and stuff. There was one club called "Whirlygig" and from the description, it seemed like a hippy sorta place where people brought their kids and danced or sat around in drum circles. I don't know why, it's not like I went to the club or that I wanted to go particularly - but the name kind of stuck with me. When I hear the word "whirly" I remember how excited I was being able to take my husband to London for the first time, because I knew he'd love it as much as I do. Anyway - flash foward a couple of years. We got a computer and a few months afterward I was thinking about setting up an e-mail account. I didn't go on messageboards or chat or anything like that. But I did want to keep in touch with family plus sign on to the Chemical Brothers mailing list. My husband and I were talking about maybe one day getting back to London, and what would we do with our son if we wanted to go clubbing and my folks couldn't watch him - and he mentions that club "whirlygig," but he slips and says "whirlygirl" instead. So I thought, that would make a great e-mail address. And it sort of went from there.

I've had a couple other screen names but I like everything that surrounds the "whirlygirl" one. Lots of good memories.

My story is quite short... back in those days when I was playing Wing Commander 5, I logged on to a chat in the evening with a total lack of creativity for usernames. One of the fighter pilots in WC5 had the call sign "Zero", so I tried that one but it was already taken. I changed the writing a bit, t voil - "c-Row".

From that the name of my studio (or whatever you might call it) derived as well (zero gravity -> c-Row / Gravitee). Interesting enough, there is a german rock band called c-Row as well, but I am not sure who came up with the name first. What I know is that their first album is in fact called "Gravity", but at least I can prove I used that name at least one year before they started recording their sessions. :D

And I think "affected by gravitee" is a great mix name to use. ;-)

That's weird, I was thinking of writing a thread exactly like this the other day, but I forgot, the brains mush lately.

Mine is simple. Thor comes from my last name, and Saytyr comes from "Say Tyr", Tyr is the son of Odin in greek mythology. The say part came from nothing :D

I know i may not post much on the forums, but i check them a few times everyday, i rarely have anything constructive to say so i stay quiet,

anyway, my name (apostle) has a decent story. I was at a chemical brothers show at hammerstein ballroom in nyc, during the surrender tour, and paul oakenfold was spinning before them ( i think it waS paul) me and my brother were dead tired at one point and my brother being older and fat needed to sit down. he went to the security guy by the balcony entrance and told them "DJ apostle is here, (pointed to me) and hes tired and pissed." apparently the security guard thought DJ apostle was some famous DJ, so he let us up and we got free drinks on the house. the name stuck since even though it was thought up on the spot.

Good one, apostle! I've heard some great "sneaking past security" stories, but your tale tops it!
