Maybe Ed can answer this for me :)

Looking through the setlists from the U.S. tour, I noticed that Brooklyn (the show I went to) was the only U.S. show to get Modern Midnight Conversation. Every other venue got Das Spiegel in its place.

This led me to wonder... why did Brooklyn get this song and no one else? How and when is this decision made? Before the gig, during the gig? Do they flip a coin? This is just a general curiosity of mine..

I'm curious too. Most performers that do live pa have their set already done ahead of time. It's VERY difficult to completely do everything on the fly, especially while trying to coordinate with the visual media. I'm so impressed that there are different songs dropped into the set at different locations all the time. There's plenty of other performers that play darn near the exact same set everywhere they go while on tour. Kudos to Ed and Tom for not doing that.

I think they went to fairly great lengths to mix things up during their tour. Not just this one but their previous tours as well. They have to know (actually they do know!) that there are many people that are hopping from gig to gig and trying to catch multiple shows per tour. So the response to that is mixing things up - I mean, they'd have to keep things interesting, fresh and surprising not just for their audience but for themselves, too.

Who knows, maybe they do flip a coin from time to time.

I wonder who would root for what then... Ed seems like a Modern Midnight guy to me :)

I think if they are playing the same crowd for the 2nd time they do a different encore. Tilburg, Holland had Das Spiegel, Amsterdam next month had AMMC while Roundhouse inbetween had Das Spiegel again. So my guess is normally they play Das Spiegel, AMMC is a new thing for the same country/city (NYC is probably as big as whole of Holland) they play in a short time period

You're probably right, although I don't see why they'd give preferential treatment to Das Spiegel. AMMC sounded really good live.

Who are we kidding? If the Chemical Brothers came out and played 2 hours of y'all would be all over it and a thought of "I wish they would play this" wouldn't cross your mind the entire time! Well maybe not, but this all seems a bit silly.
