I like ALL the tracks no exceptions, my only problem with WATN is that transitions between songs are inexistant (apart from BG and AMMC).

Surrender really wasn't better, no real transitions but 1, mainly overlapping of sounds like UTI to OOC. Same with PTB for that matter... really cwu and the first two albums were big on transitions.

I dunno if it matters finally as I find the songs to flow into each other pretty well - i've never had that problem with chems albums - they are quite the album experience once they grow on u.

but yeah - i like the transition from burst generator to midnight conversation, fuckin trippy.

anyone notice the eastern influences in the chems music? Can't seem to point at any part right now, but I've been feeling this again with this album, the last few singles, some parts here and there have an eastern vibe. even the main keys part on hey boy hey girl is very indian - i don't know if there are equivalents of that instrument in europe, but that sound is very much a what's called a "been" in hindi - the same stuff the ole time snake charmers use.

Hmm I really wanted to wait until the albums official release to bough my little too cents in but with all this forum love and I can’t hold back.

Besides I’ve had two screwdrivers and a Grolsch and I feel like typing. ….

“We are the night” is an emotionally drawn to album. I can go ahead and express that this is their best work yet and you know what… production wise it probably is… but I’m not going to note it down as one of my favorites as of yet ‘cos when everything dies down its then you realise if its to be on the top of your list (even though I’ve never decided which one that is anyway). I made that mistake with PTB. I thought it was my favorite and I listened to it all the time during 05 but now I’ll go through weeks (even months) before I’ll listen to it fully…. Not because I don’t like it anymore it’s just some of the tracks were great for a while but they were not the stay with me forever. I’m happy for the release of WATN this year though because times are better today of electronic music then it was back in 2005. Remember every stupid journalist reviewing PTB had stated that dance music is dead. You probably wouldn’t here that now. More and more music lovers have found the benefits of electronic music….each dance festival is getting more packed each year. You should have seen The Good Vibrations this year…. It was a twice the crowd of last year.

Back on WATN I wasn’t instantly fallen in love with the first listen but after a few more listens I grew to appreciate the wonderful and hard work put in to an amazing psychedelic trip of an LP. I was scared ‘cos I still wasn’t sure if I liked Do it Again but surprisingly the albums longer edit has allowed this first single to rapidly grow on me.

Overall I can’t express words for an Album with such variety as most of Tom and Ed’s albums are so I’ll break it down into tracks:

1.No path to Follow: Intro… Dark, nothing much to it but I guess it’s to show of what’s to come.

2.We are the Night: Insane intro to a metal track and same sounds used for “out of control”. I love how the bleeps keep going while the rest of the track kicks in. Probably one of my fave songs of the album!! It makes you feel like your traveling through space really fast while shooting stars are going crazy in the background. Well maybe that’s just me.

3.All rights reserved: This track I’m still learning to appreciate. I don’t know if the vocals work but I’ll probably change my mind later. I’m also not too sure what it’s all about… vocally wise. Instrumental wise it’s insane! Love the hard beats that don’t apologise for nothing and the chorus is defiantly the best part of track.

4.Saturate: I don’t think I could ever get sick of this track. I can visualise it in a British movie preview or something. Slightly different to the original EBW8 but ending leaving you wanting more. In the top 3 for sure!! I can’t imagine how such a break can make you feel so emotional

5.Do it Again: I did state the first time I heard this song the vocal drove me to the wall but after hearing the album edit and the seeing the video has saved this single. I still can’t stand that squeaky toy sound but that small part with the funky guitar makes up for anything annoying.

6.Das Spiegal: Out of all the songs of WATN this is the one that stays in my head the most. Feel good track of the album… very pretty and soulful. I wonder who the female groaning and moaning is. If you listen to this on head phones you can hear her whisper something really fast after the moaning. I’ve been trying to figure out what it is.

7.The Salmon Dance: SOOOO FRESHHHH!!! I’ve always loved this kind of hip hop. The lyrics are weird but they work so well. A+ Tom and Ed for doing something a little different and of course FRESH! Salmon? Who would have deared….

8. Burst Generator: I want to hear this live now! I can’t express how beautiful and amazing this song is. It’s an insane build up and has you visualising different types of machines exploding when it finally climaxes. Orgasmic and brings a tear to your eye.

9.A Modern Midnight Conversation: My first love for the Album. Shitting all over anything daft punk has ever produced. So funky and wonderfully disco. I like that the vocal is so simple ‘cos instrumentally this track can’t be ruined by crappy lyrics. This track delivers in everyway. The insane sounds of church bells and distorted trumpets at about 4.26 through is gorgeous, fucking hell, it makes me want to dance, so funky, so delightful! I suggest (if you haven’t already) to listen to this with earphones, you wont believe your ears.

10.Battle Scars: I don’t know about this track yet. I’ve only heard it a few times. The lyrics are a psychedelic brain twist. I have to have another listen to get it. I’m not going to add my final word as I’m still uncertain on how I feel about this whole track.

11.Harpoons: Almost a tribute to My Bloody Valentine. Just gorgeous. Like a morning after visual in my head of a sunrise. I’m disappointed this track only goes for 2 and half minutes. I can’t add any more words to such a wonderful ambient track.

12.The pills wont help you now: Sort of a squeal to “Close your eyes”. There are so many emotional tracks on this album and this last track is both sad and heart felt. Although unlike ‘close your eyes” I can actually sit back and listen without being so overwhelmed that I have to change tracks. I haven’t listened to “close your eyes” in a year I must admit just for that reason. Bah harden up kwids.

Yeah I know I don’t post often but I hope this will make up for it. Thanks Tom and Ed for this wonderful creation…. And come out to oz…. we’ll go all emo on you if you pass us. :P

its a little early but thanks anyway

M;R-->UTI--OOC

GG?-->HBHG-->Surrender-->DO

More than half of the album is mixed.

((((kwiddle)))) Nice review!! Agreed very much with the points you brought up, especially not believing your ears if you take a listen on headphones. It's pure psychedelic magic, so many songs are so intoxicating in their melodic abundance.

I found your bit about Harpoons interesting as a nod to My Bloody Valentine and I can totally hear this. I was also thinking of Global Communications a little bit (from their album Chapter House Blood Music) but a lot more supple and fresh and updated in sound. I see it as a sunrise track as well... I don't have a problem with the length, as sunrises are short and sweet...

What I find is that this album has enough going on in each song that it can be enjoyed both at low and high volumes. High volume for obvious reasons, but even at lower volumes these songs are so abundant they can fill a room.

Don't forget the the transition from DIA to Das Speigal! I just love how that works!

The rest of the transitions are really soft noises that you can hear at the start of the next track. It's very subtle, and I kinda like it.

On this topic, BG-->AMMC reminds me alot of IBIA-->Galaxy Bounce except more "Whooshy" rather than turntabelist. Very Nice!

I will read the other monster posts after dinner!

But guys - i said ; i THINK this MIGHT be their best album yet. I didnt say it actually is. But it has potential to be. Deffo.

Plus , nobody is gonna tell me i cant say that after 4 listens. I know how i listen to music - i know what it does to me - and i know the feeling it gives me , and i know what usually happends after that. So i think it's not up to you guys to judge what i think eh ;)

I get what you mean mx, I was more thinking of consistent mixes, like hbhg-> surrender, IBIA->GB, BG->AMMC where the drums don't stop.

I've listened to it 4 or 5 times a day, every day since I got it, except yesterday.

Today I found myself going into withdrawals.

well...i' ve the album finally

few words about it

i think it's a good album...less dance more quiet than the others...more psychedelic i think...better for a long travel by car for example than for a rave party...i like burst generator, modern midnight,we are the night,do it again and also dsa spiegel is quiet good.i don't like too much saturate salmon dance and battle scars...but

for me the real masterpiece of the album is the pills....what a grat melody..what a great atmosphere!!!!one of the best songs of the chemical brothers ever.this album is different from what they have done in the past and i like it!!

p.s. i think battle scars really sounds like the doors...the piano riff...the voice...it reminds me of the doors...what do you think?

I love how everyone has a different "order" for their favorite albums.

I think it shows the range and different appeals of the Chemical Brothers, if nothing else than being able to appeal to a wide range of people, if that's even different.

For me (right now):

1. Surrender

2. DYOH

3. WATN

4. EPD

5. CWU

6. PTB

It's so hard to decide between WATN and DYOH for me, right now. Jeeeeesus...

Fucking Tom & Ed, you have an amazing catalogue!!!!

One thing I love about WATN is the fact that I love listening to it all the way through. I don't skip any tracks, and I love to just sit down and give it a full listen.

It's so elating... :) :) :)

I do not have it in me to rate the albums from fave to least fave because that will likely change, so I will pass on that. I may have done that in the past, but I cannot remember. But if I do that then chances are down the road I will have put my foot in my mouth because times change and so do my moods. All I can say is sometimes I am in the mood for Dig Your Own Hole, other times it is Surrender, or Push The Button and so on. Each album to me means different things and I just play along and enjoy the ride. Right now its all about We Are The Night and that is the one Im currently hooked on like a drug. Instant love at first listen and it will always be special to me...
