M'Chebne Escribi:

another clue was harry choo choo using the same break on his "suck my clock" release on bambossa....suck my clock/beat the clock....you see....

I've just read that back...I'm such a sad man........hahahaha - anyway, top tune and the chems afrika version always gets me grinning like a loon...

i'm quite obsessed with this particular beat riff. i thought it originated from the, House of Gypsie's 'Sume Sigh Sey' but that was produced back in 93.

'beat the clock' by sparks i have never heard, but that was produced back in 1979!! so i think you have found the orginal sample source!!! as you said HCCR used it in 'suck my clock' (a favorite of mine) and also more recently used on the 2003 mixes of lil' louis 'Blackout'.

thanks for the info M'Chebne!!!

hahaha yeah it's a filthy old tune def.....I'm really in the mood to see the boys play now.....hmmm think we need a return to turnmills, warm up for glasters maybe....

I think the version of beat the clock from that I.F mix must be a re-edit.....

I downloaded the original from slsk and there's a horribly cheesey camp chorus in it.........odd really, it's such a deep techy track and suddenly it goes all perky and jolly and then back to this really freaky drugged out beat...It seems a lot of those early proto house/disco/italo tracks have dodgy vocals....

I love the bit at the start of this version of afrika from resonance 'yellow train' with all the train sounds and that mad shifting drum pattern then the way it flips up into the sparks beat.....a snatch of the jacksons.....genius!

I guess that's why it never made it to the bonus CD....way too many samples!

Chebbers :)

like most chems dj sets (exc. confron your demons, in glint, and other promo dj sets) we'll probably never get the full set list since tom and ed are full of impossible to find tracks... Here are some of the songs they played that I know and you should too, this is pretty much the order they appeared in:

+Get Yourself High

+ Some Acid Songs

+ Portions of In glint including Dj Milo and the Hey Riff

+Hia

+Under the Influence (mix 2)

+It Began in Afrika (Sample-composed version)

+EBW 6

Many of their Dj sets have genre themes, For example Live at the Social was Hip hop and Acid, and Confront Your Demons was mostly world music and kinda rockish, this was more fast and acid

I thought that version was Incredible, really got the adrenaline going - not that I was pooped out on the dancefloor or anything but you know what I mean- I'd love to have a good copy of this or at the very least, hear it again in another set sometime - remember when I said on here back in October that I thought it might've been some sort of working version of Here Come The Drums (wishful thinking, eh? ;) ) and you spotted what I heard, all those miles away, and set the record straight.

*sighs happily*

Just got through reading that long tranceaddict.com thread that was posted by Ghundi. The pictures were nice (except for the ones with the blisters on that guy's feet - yuck!) and it looks like everyone had a really great time which is good to read about. The reviews were OK, the Chems weren't bashed that bad, but the reviews in the Chemical department were a little lacking - understandably, the Chemical obviously weren't what they were into. I don't mind a bad review of the Chems, that's fair enough but at least give some reasons besides "they almost made me fall asleep" Give me some substance! And this bit: "I don't think they [chemicals] should've been put that late after Tiesto & Oakey..." Honestly, when the name of the band is at the top of a flier in large letters, it means they're practically headlining the show ie: the last to go on.

I guess I just wanted to read an in-depth review of the Chems, but like chemicalreaction I'm having a hard time finding any. The sets and gigs are a massive part of what they do, the live experience is something to be shared and enjoyed, even if it's a review in print. I wish I could get a job writing reviews of live Chemical sets and gigs. *sigh* Not very lucrative if I limited myself to only Chemical reviews but it would be fun!

On a sidenote - I do feel all those people on that board were right to harp on Oakenfold - kind of refreshing if you think about it, considering he's the lord of the trance n'all...

Don't get me wrong, there are some great Oakenfold tunes and he did a lot to introduce trance music to the masses. I've always felt that trance music is a great introductory to all the other kinds of electronic music out there, and Oakenfold plays a large part in the introductory process. I think it's only fair to give credit where credit is due and my hat's off to Oakey for that.

That being said, I have to mention that Oakenfold's music tends to be a little stagnant, very samey. I know he's tried new things with his music but it's just the same old boom tiss boom tiss (insert synth melody, repeat, then repeat again and again) boom tiss boom tiss. It's just, I don't know... stagnant? I know he's tried new things and I don't hate his music completely, now that's just silly - but perhaps there's just not enough going on in his music that makes it standout imo.

I've seen Oakenfold do his thing a couple of times. The last time I saw him was at a massive called Nocturnal Wonderland a couple of years ago. There were all kinds of people really into it, but I felt, because of the sameness of the music, that his set was lackluster. Also had the feel of being straight off the record with hardly any variation to the songs. It had high points for sure, but I wasn't really feeling it (maybe because there was some kid with glowsticks trying to get in my face the whole time - but I don't think that's a large factor in this.) He's also famous for the Jesus pose. He'll stand up and outstretch his arms like he's on the cross, but with an arrogant "all hail to me!" look on his face. I'm not really one to pick on a person's stage persona as it's part of the show, but really. Come on Oakey, lighten up!!

god this thread is going down hill talking about the monkey man!!! i have had the misfortune to witness one of his sets once, although i have been at many events he has been at, i just avoid him. he plays a brand of music that does nothing for me. i remember when i was him at cream millenium eve, he played that 'bullet in the heart' tune, which is the total embodiment of everything i hate!!! as for his production when i'm at work listening to god alful commerical radio we a randomly subjected to his 'stary eyed suprise'. OMG what was he thinking when he made that!!!!! i'm glad he has been busy in america for the last few years spearheading the US dance revolution cos it means a, dance musics profile is raised in the states which is a good thing and b, he is less high profile over here!!

having said that he does have his good side. back in the early nineties when i was a teenager he did produce one of the greatest albums of the decades. i'm talking of course of the happy mondays 'pills thrills and bellyaches'. infact all his work prior to that album he did with the mondays was pure gold!!!!

i think there mix albums are always quite different to what you'd expect to hear in one of their dj sets (excluding anti nazi and BGWIO). this miami mix is your typical dj set, full on acid trip!!!

i don't like to glorify these bootlegs. but i justify downloading them cos i buy the music, i go to the shows,. it's just nice to have a booty with the dj exclusives. i now have a good copy of afrika demo and their smokebelch/feet cut ups. always the highlights in their dj sets

i keep meaning to mention this on a post but i keep forgetting to add it. anyway, how anoying is that woman at the end of the set??? the one who talks over star guitar going on about 'PVD wants you to rock the vote'. it's bad enough that there is an mc going every now and then 'lets hear it for the chemical brothers'. but the chems get to there last tune, they've built the music up to the crescendo that is star guitar and its all ruined. if she was something to do with PVD then why cant she talk when he starts his set?? it sounds like as soon as she started talking, the chems gave up on playing star guitar and faded the record out early. it just sounded very rude to me

Thanks sneakerbeater for the tracklist.

I got far with my list.

But with some stuff I got confused. (dubplates)

About Oakenfold,:

The Elvis remix he did was nicely done.

The feelings you all have about Oakenfold that is way I feel about Tiesto.

He is very commercial here in Holland.

Every track he brings out hits the Top 5 of the hitlist.

(Shit list if you asked me)

Ofcourse he also makes some good tracks but so does Oakenfold.

About the MC and the girl at the end of the Ultra show.

Why did they have a mic. in the first place?

It wasn't like they were adding something.

That MC was crap and the girl talked right through the chems show.

And I even don't understand what she was talking about.

Although we heard the MC to much.

On other shows he even talked more.

(according to some reviews I've seen)
