Ben, I've been ill off and on since the end of May, not in any mood to be on here. Been recovering nicely the last month, which is a good fuckin thing, since I'm going to be in Kaui (hawaii) tomorrow. Good news about intestinal disroders, I've been on a liquid diet off and on for months, dropped more that 40 pounds, so I'm the hotness now.
there will be pics of Hawaii to come.

There are many, many ways to die in Kauai:
Drowning
The Sun
Killed by natives for mocking their love of spam
Falling coconuts. Seriously.
Accidently licking a toxic frog
Dragged across reef
Plummetting! (nearly plummetting to my death was by far the activity that took up the most time in Kauai)
Rimmed by parrot fish
$1.99 Ahi salad special
Leptospirosis
Ignoring the 'Danger: Man-o-war' signs
Ignoring the 'Danger: Do Not Go Past This Sign' signs
Slipping while hiking to the bottom of Wailua Falls (see 'Plummetting')
Getting hit by a rock falling 127 feet while swimming under Wailua Falls (assuming you don't plummet)
Mai Tais (nearly killed me)
The Na Pali Coast (an 11 mile hike that seems based around Plummetting)
Pecked to death by wild roosters
Dismembered by hitchhiking tweakers
Zipline mishaps
Exhaustion
Teabagged by hula dancers (the male ones, obviously)
Starvation while looking for the only McDonalds on the island since your money ran out yesterday and you can't afford the $40 the average lunch on the island costs
Landing on the Forbidden Island and getting killed by natives (yes, there really is a place called the Forbidden Island that no one's allowed to go to. Seriously. Look it up)
12" centipede
EELS!
Cane Spiders
Drowning due to panic caused by gross-out from brushing 18" sea slug whilst snorkeling
'How muddy can it be?'

Jeanie is still around, though she mostly is a lurker. Feel the Jeanie presence!!
Kauai was astoundingly beautiful and laid back. Some parts, old tiny cities that were abandoned or left as one-horse towns when hurricanes hit or when sugar cane plantations were shut down, sit in a state of dilapidation... but it didn't seem seedy or scary. Just as-is, just different... There was a hurricane there in 1992 that was quite devastating and a chicken farm was destroyed which resulted in countless flocks of chickens left to roam free on the island - so nowadays you can't go anywhere without coming across a ferel chicken. Everything grows in abundance there including redwood trees. No kidding we saw avocados the size of footballs (imagine the guacamole, folks, just imagine!!) We hiked up this jungly trail from a nearly deserted beach and a guy ran past us with a machete... 3 minutes later he he came running up the trail carrying a huge bunch of bananas that had grown wild on a tree. Everyone - even the tourists - were so friendly and filled with aloha goodness. Quite a nice break from Souther California which tends to be on the aggressive side at times. The air, though humid, was crystal clear and the nights were balmy and tropical. I've been to the big island of Hawaii (Kona), Maui and Oahu in the past but I like Kauai the best for its ruggedness. A lot of places there you have to hike to, including the beaches but it's well worth it. Not only is the water pristine and seemingly untouched by humankind, the beaches tend to be free and clear of the sunbathing clutter you often see, read or hear about with fancy resorts. Tons of snorkeling to be had, along with whale watching and enough hiking to keep you occupied (if you're in shape and totally up for it). I'd love to go back some year and hike the Na Pali coast line for a couple of days. It's hardcore and very rugged, talk about getting back to nature. But stash isn't up for it and cliffs scare my son so I'm looking at you, Jeanie. I need a hiking buddy, hehe.
