There's no need to ridicule fundamentalist religion, it does it all by itself

Corrected, though I'm not exactly a fan of ridiculing any religion in general. And I'm impressed that Nathan Fillion's parody character is somehow less out there than the original Bibleman thing! Maybe it's the better production value...

I truly believed this was a parody.
Imagine my surprise when, after a little digging, found out it was not.
No mocking of religion intended, but of trashy production and hilarious dialog Posted Image

Watch the whole thing.

I saw this band live over the weekend. They went down pretty well in front of a crowd of, ooh 3000 or so.
The singer's unique style doesn't come across as quite so weird in front of a large crowd. The above tune got the biggest cheer though, so I guess everyone else had watched this clip too. The power of social media eh?
I should probably point out that I saw a few other acts over the weekend too, such as:
Jagwar Ma
All We Are
Simian Mobile Disco (Live)
Arthur Beatrice
Pixies
The Horrors
Erol Alkan b2b Daniel Avery (They played Tom's Through Me amongst other gems. It worked nicely)
Woman's Hour (nice version of Springsteen's Dancing In the Dark)
Fat White Family
Jon Hopkins
Warpaint
SBTRKT
Jamie XX
Pawws
Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) with Debbie from MBV on bass.
Justin Robertson (nice to hear him play Gerd's 'Still Believe' which I posted to Now Playing recently , he also played Chems DJ fave Lack Of Love)
Money
Teleman
Neneh Cherry.

Didn't manage to catch Todd Terje or James Holden (both live) unfortunately.
Still, not a bad weekend's worth of music.

^ That song and especially his performance have seriously grown on me ever since I posted that, and now I really want to see them live. Talk about honest passion as odd as it might be, you don't see that often enough in music currently.

Definitely more than a few bands - nice round up! How did Jagwar Ma go down? Big fan of the band, and based on the few clips I've seen of them playing they seem pretty formidable live, but Gabriel's voice is pretty hit and miss.

Well damn--that sounds like quite a weekend. I recently saw SMD and am going to see Jon Hopkins next month. How did both sound to you?

So my tv just turns on by itself, but with only sound (no picture), then runs through some channels and turns off. I'm scared!

Only thing missing was this song:

This little article/interview since Letterman might be of interest: The Guardian

Well this one may be down to expectations. I had this idea that Jagwar Ma were like Temples but with more of a dance groove. Perhaps that's partly because they have both remixed each other. I had already seen Temples live, so imagined a similar band set-up but with added synths. In reality JM were set up more like a dance act with added guitars. A big table at the back with lots of electronic 'stuff' which reminded me of Rick Smiths um 'table' (I couldn't see what the electronics were. Probably completely different to Underworlds. Don't beat me up!), plus a guy on guitar, and the the singer with a gizmo (technical term!) for processing/repeating his vocals. Tim 'Charlatans' Burgess was there and later tweeted that the place was bouncing. He was right, the crowd went nuts. I thought the vocals were ok, but I don't have the album so wasn't really comparing.
Instead of some psychedelic sounds that you could shake your ass to, it felt like a full on fist pumping kind of a thing. I'll admit I've moshed to Born Slippy at Underworld gigs before now, so I can't criticize. It just wasn't quite what I was looking for from JM. But if I was 18 I probably would have loved it.
Oh one more thing. Gabriel wore a baseball cap back to front with his hair hanging down the sides. He reminded me of Harry Enfield's Kevin character from the Kevin & Perry sketches/film, which meant that I found it really hard to take him seriously!

SMD were good. I'm guessing it was a similar gig to the one you witnessed Pooter (in the desert I think you said?).
About 50 minutes of continuous music. Because it started 'slowly' it was a case of heads nodding and people eventually dancing as the beats and the bass-y bits came in. It was nice to see people dancing in an unforced way as they slowly got into it. James/Jas were un-showy with the occasional nod and smile towards the audience. I enjoyed the lack of hype. Some visuals might have been nice though.

Re Jon Hopkins - some visuals would have been even nicer here. He was on the Main outdoor stage. Although it was after 8pm it was still light outside and people were sitting on the grass and chatting over the music. I only got to see a few minutes of his show, but what I heard sounded more 'dancable' than the Immunity album does on my stereo. I got a free cd of the album a few months ago, and I find it nice to read the Sunday Papers to. I wouldn't go so far as to call myself a fan of Hopkins (in fact I questioned his music on the albums of 2013 thread), but I heard enough to think he'd be worth seeing in an indoor venue with some lazers, n strobes n stuff.
