More Tales From Dr. Awesome

Last night, though. I was feeling like rocking out, which didn't quite fit with the meager crowd which was around. The DJ that goes on before me, God bless him, puts on some really depressing shit a lot of the time and it always seems to drain the place of energy, not to mention people, before I go on. It's really annoying. But whatever. I biked 14 miles yesterday and I was all about throwing down a good set.
I managed to f*ck with The White Stripes "Seven Nation Army" to get the timing right to beat match to other tracks, and this led to me rocking out in the DJ booth. I was surprised at how many rock/pop tracks came out--Led Zeppelin, Freeland, Talking Heads, Michael Jackson--and all due to the fact that I was FEELIN' IT!
While I'm absolutely fond of people coming by and telling me that I'm doing a great job, one of my repeat fans was back, rocking out in my booth, getting way too close to me for my comfort, offering me drugs I didn't want to do, playing the role of a cougar, constantly apologizing for being an "asshole," all at the same time asking me what I was doing and wondering why I wasn't constantly paying attention to her. I don't know if she thought that I was surfing the net while letting a pre-mixed set play or what...
Some of my favorite responses to her: "No, I don't want to do any coke. It's Tuesday night"; "Really, I promise, I'm not gay"; "Yeah, sorry, I'm DJing."
It was a triumph when the few people stayed until the end of my set to listen, and I was able to end the set with this awesome rock track from my hometown that holds a special place in my heart, and play with timed delay and feedback to make the climactic end draw out for about two minutes. w00t.

Also, I'm definitely becoming a better drunk DJ. Much better drug of choice for this than shrooms.
Oh, yeah, I also weaved in four Chemical Brothers tracks.
@Whitenoise: you'll be happy to know one of them was The Golden Path. That went on right before The Talking Heads "Once in a Lifetime"

come on man, thats what dj'ing is all about, blowies under the decks from ropey old birds and lines of bronson off the wheels of steel - ESPECIALLY on a tuesday night!
Hahaha, mips you crack me up!
Glad to hear you had a good set nonetheless, Pooter!

True, true, but for me some good weed is the best for a tight set. The only problem is you get thirsty, and booze and weed don't always work so well together when spinning.
beer=fun set
weed=masterful set
beer+weed=neither of those

Watch out for the Hep C. Seriously, I look have to look at medical records at work all day and that seems to be a common one, and being a horny drug-addict with a few years under your belt only does so much to the probability.

DJing drunk is an art. Especially when there's no monitoring in the DJ Booth and you have to do a transition.
I was DJing too 2 days ago. Worst night ever. It was a student party, I was doing the warm up. 3 or 4 persons came asking to play more "general" tracks.
One girl even came and spoke for almost 1mn about how I was supposed to represent the spirit of the school, that the music I was playing was not showing the right image, bla bla bla. I replied that if the music I play is not what they wanted then they should have hired another DJ, that I was doing this for free, so I wouldn't care a bit stopping the music, taking my laptop and leaving right away, no music at all would probably be a better "image" for her school then.
Much more crap happened that night, and I don't want to get into details.
EDIT : oh and I didn't even get to do the Hungarian friend I was with that night.

I just read this on boards.ie:
1. PLAY SOMETHING GOOD...SOMETHING WE CAN DANCE TO !
The DJ has to play for more than one person...so what you hate may be another's favorite song and EVERYTHING played here can be danced to one way or another.
2. WOULD YOU PLAY SOMETHING WITH A "BEAT" !
BE SERIOUS! We know of NO songs played in a club that don't have some sort of BEAT!
3. I DON'T KNOW WHO SINGS IT AND I DON'T KNOW THE NAME OF THE SONG, BUT IT GOES LIKE THIS....
PLEASE don't sing for the DJ. They have to put up with smoke filled rooms and dangerous decibel levels all night long...Do them a favor and DON'T give them a rendition of your favorite song.
4. EVERYBODY WANTS TO HEAR IT !
Oh, sure... you polled everyone in the club and, as their spokesperson, you're requesting the song.
5. EVERYBODY WILL DANCE IF YOU PLAY IT !
The DJ won't. I guess that blows a hole in that theory!
6. I CAN GET LAID IF YOU PLAY IT !
Why settle for one night? Buy the album and get laid for a whole month!
7. I WANT TO HEAR IT NEXT !
The ONLY people who can get away with that statement write the DJ's paycheck!
8. WHAT DO YOU HAVE ?
It's a lot easier for you to go have another beer and figure out what you want to hear than it is for the DJ to recite the name of every record in the booth!
9. HEY, MAN, NOBODY CAN DANCE TO THIS !
It's NOT advisable to say this when the dance floor is packed (but some people do anyway) ! HOWEVER, even if there is only ONE person on the floor, it STILL contradicts the statement!
10. PLAY IT SOON, BECAUSE WE'RE LEAVING !
If your gonna leave after he plays it, why shouldn't he wait till the very last song so you stay all night! If you wanna get your request played faster, try writing it on the back of a $20 bill and handing it to the dj.
Copy, paste, print.

That's definitely a fair list of shit people throw out at the DJ.
I dj for free right now, so I just have fun with it. I like to make people's night when they make a request, so I don't have a problem with people coming up and ask me to play something. In fact, it's a bit of a challenge to mix in things that don't quite mesh together so nicely and I have to make a path from point A to point B, which actually ends up being point E because no way am I going to mix in Beck with this Autotune remix. True story.
@Ben_J: I missed your story before, man. Lame night. Hopefully you've had better nights recently, especially the not getting laid part. School spirit? I got your school spirit right here, baby. ::grabs crotch::

too bad that it's about 140 bpm. that means i can only play it at last track ;) and not embedded during my hour and a half.
